These are TNT 300, 302R and TNT 600i. All these motorcycles were discontinued earlier this year due to problems with their previous partner – DSK Group of Pune. 2018 edition of the the Benelli TNT 300, 302R and TNT 600i are now on sale across India. Prices are Rs 3.5 lakhs, Rs 3.7 lakhs and Rs 6.2 lakhs ex-showroom respectively. Bookings are open at a down payment of Rs 10,000. Production and dispatch of the Benelli TNT 300, Benelli 302R and Benelli TNT 600i starts in the 1st week of December 2018, followed by deliveries beginning 2nd week onwards, in a phased manner.

Vikas Jhabakh, Managing Director, Benelli India said, “A core element of Benelli’s vision in India is to enhance customer satisfaction. On that front, we recently announced revised service interval plans that reduces service costs by up to 34 percent. Staying true to our commitment, we are also announcing 5-years of unlimited kilometre warranty as standard, making Benelli the first Superbike brand in India to offer such an unmatchable benefit to its customers.”

Benelli on major expansion spree, aims to add 25 dealers by March 2019. Krishna Malge, CEO – Benelli India said, “With a series of new models in the pipeline, we are also focusing on expanding our dealership base across the country. We will have about 40 dealers by March 2019, bringing Benelli closer to our existing and prospective customers.”

The launch of these three motorcycles takes the total count of Benelli bikes in India to 7 – TNT25, TNT 300, 302R, TNT 600i, TNT 600GT, TNT 899 and TNT R. Benelli has also confirmed the launch of TRK 502 (Tourer) and TRK 502X (Adventure) in Q2 2019. Benelli is the first superbike brand to offer 5-year unlimited kilometre warranty as standard.

To deliver better ownership experience, Benelli India has increased service intervals from every 4000 km or 4 months of periodic service to 6000 km or 6 months of periodic service. This has helped owners to save 34% in maintenance.

The Benelli TNT 300 naked 302R fully faired sports bike gets power from a 300cc, liquid-cooled vertical twin-cylinder engine with max power output of 38.26 Bhp @ 11500 rpm and max torque of 26.5 Nm @ 10,000 rpm. Benelli TNT 600i gets power from a 600cc liquid-cooled inline, 4 valve engine mated to a six-speed transmission to return 85.07 BHP @ 11500 rpm and max torque of 52 Nm.

Thanks to Aurum Kawasaki in Chattar pur Enclave, New Delhi, who generously lent us the bike to review, we were able to find out.

DESIGN AND STYLING OF 2019 KAWASAKI NINJA 300 ABS

The new Ninja 300 looks much like its elder siblings and has a very sporty and stylish look. With the new graphics plastered on, the bike gives a very energetic and wild feel. The Ninja 300 that I got to ride came in the signature Kawasaki green but I think that the electrifying blue paint looks better. The mean looking beak at the front houses twin halogen units and sadly there are no LED DRLs. To their credit, these halogen units do provide a very respectable illumination at night.

Despite the bike boasting of very aggressive looks, it is very comfortable to ride. It has an upright seating position and handlebars that are not set too low making this bike lovable to ride in the city. The cushion is comfortable and there is also a pillion seat which is pretty decent by sports bike standards. Even after hours and hours of riding on this bike, your body won’t be screaming in pain.

The cool looks of the bike are only interrupted by the grab handle at the back, which makes the bike look like some kind of utility vehicle. Come on Kawasaki, if you can develop your own supercharged engine then I am pretty sure you can do a better job at designing a simple grab handle! I only wish the instrument cluster was a bit more fleshed out. Not that the panel provided is bad, it just pales a little in comparison to the fancy kit on other competing bikes. On the Ninja 300 you get a big analogue tachometer along with a couple of indicators and a rather small digital display. The digital display shows things like the speedometer, odometer, two trip meters, fuel level and time. If anything, it could have included a distance to empty and gear level indicator.

ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE OF 2019 KAWASAKI NINJA 300 ABS

The 296cc twin cylinder engine on the Ninja 300 is one of the most refined among the bikes I have ridden recently. The way it climbs the speedometer without shuddering like a shack in the storm is remarkable. Peak power of 38.4hp and peak torque of 27Nm comes at 11,000rpm and 10,000rpm which are a bit late for city use. The bike does struggle a little when you want to accelerate quickly, especially in the second gear. Though the acceleration is very linear and smooth and you do get used to it after a few hours of riding. The good thing, however, is that this bike is loads of fun to rev. You do not feel the need to up shift until you reach the redline and that is a feeling you can get addicted to.

Give this bike an open highway and it can go way over 100kmph with ease. The slip and assist clutch makes clutch pulls effortless and gear shift precise. I really admired that when I found myself stuck in traffic. Riding around the city on the Ninja 300 will not be a bother because the liquid cooling does a good job of keeping the engine cool. Only when you find yourself stuck in traffic is there some warmth to be felt on the right leg. In my short experience with the bike I was getting close to 32kmpl which is pretty good for a bike in this segment.

The exhaust note left me wanting for a bit more. It starts off nice and bassy but as you pull the accelerator, the sound becomes more treble heavy and a bit feeble. Handling this bike is fun and almost effortless. It is great for people who want to try bigger bikes but are afraid that they won’t be able to handle them properly. Maneuvering the Ninja 300 through traffic was no problem. Kawasaki has equipped this bike with dual channel ABS with a 290mm petal disc brake at the front and a 220mm petal disc at the rear. Both come with dual piston calipers and offer nice progression. The front outshines the rear brake which takes a little while to come into full force. Even the ABS intrusion is more apparent when you stomp on the rear brake immediately. The 17-inches MRF Zapper tyres provide excellent grip on the road and it is very easy to maintain your line when you chuck this bike into a corner. The agile nature of the bike combined with its surefootedness encourages you to lean a lot every time there is a tasty bend. If I were to nitpick, a wider tyre at the rear would have further improved the stability of the bike over rocky and muddy surfaces. The suspension in its stock state has been tuned to be a little stiff and potholes and bumps are felt when you go over them. Thankfully you can adjust the rear suspension to be more forgiving and comfortable over undulations.

VERDICT

If you are in the market for a 300cc twin cylinder motorcycle then there is really no reason for you to look beyond the Kawasaki Ninja 300. It looks ferocious, has a very comfortable riding position and a very refined motor. This new iteration of the Ninja 300 has come down in price by almost Rs 60,000 and now costs Rs 2.98 lakh (ex-showroom), thanks to the increase in localisation of parts. Yes, you could get a few single cylinder 300cc bikes for less but they will not pack the kind of refinement and top end performance that the new Ninja 300 has to offer.

KTM DUKE 125 launched in India at INR 118,163.29

KTM has announced the launch of the 125 Duke ABS in the Indian market. The KTM 125 Duke ABS has been priced at INR 118,163 (ex-showroom Delhi) and will be available in three colours options – Orange, White and Black across 450 exclusive KTM showrooms in India. The bike undercuts the 200 Duke as KTM’s entry-level model in the Indian market and will be available in ABS variant only.

Internationally, KTM has given the 125 Duke a complete makeover, as the motorcycle resembles the styling of the new 390 Duke. The India spec model, however, retains the looks of the previous generation to keep costs from spiraling out of control. Thus, you would find a conventional headlight at the front instead of a full-LED unit on the 2017 model. The full-digital display from the previous generation has been retained too.

Hardware specifications include premium features like trellis frame, aluminium swingarm, 43mm upside-down telescopic forks at the front, and dual-channel ABS. Stopping power comes from a 300 mm disc at the front and a 230 mm disc at the rear. Engine specs feature a 124.7cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected engine that is mated to a six-speed transmission. The motor delivers 14.5 PS of maximum power at 9,250 rpm and 12 Nm of peak torque at 8,000 rpm.

Speaking on occasion of the Indian launch of the KTM 125 Duke ABS, Amit Nandi, President (Pro biking) at Bajaj Auto Ltd. said:

Last week, KTM updated its product portfolio with the launch of the ABS-equipped 200 Duke in the Indian market. The 199.5cc model with ABS is priced at INR 1,60,000 while the standard model will be available at 1,51,757 (both ex-showroom Delhi). The non-ABS variant is expected to be discontinued very soon. Do note that the non-ABS version of the Bajaj Dominar 400 has been suspended and the official website only lists the pricing for the ABS model.

The 125 Duke and 200 Duke ABS are not available at any showrooms in Mumbai yet. Booking amount for both the bikes remains in the range of INR 1,000 to 10,000 depending on dealerships. The bikes will come to the showroom in December while deliveries are expected to commence in 15-20 days.

The 200 Duke, which was once the most affordable KTM available, has become inaccessible for most buyers thanks to the addition of ABS and 5-year mandatory insurance which has bumped up its price to almost Rs 2 lakh. This is where the smaller Duke comes in, it offers good performance and premium mechanical components at a reasonable price point. Priced at Rs 1.18 lakh, the 125 Duke is positioned as the Austrian manufacturer’s entry-level motorcycle for customers looking to hop onto the KTM bandwagon.

It also gets top-notch mechanical components from the 200 Duke, including the trellis frame, swingarm, USD front forks and a rear monoshock, both from WP. It borrows the exact same braking setup as the 200 Duke. The 300mm front and 230mm rear disc brake also gets a single-channel ABS. The 17-inch front and rear alloys come wrapped in chunky 110-section and 150-section MRF Revz tyres, respectively. Its small 125cc engine is expected to make optimum use of the 10.2-litre tank to provide a decent mileage. That said, with a kerb weight of 148kg, the KTM 125 Duke is also the heaviest bike in its segment.

With a power output of of 14.5PS, the KTM 125 Duke completes with rivals above its segment. It goes toe-to-toe with the Yamaha FZ-FI, Suzuki Gixxer, Honda CB Hornet 160R, Bajaj Pulsar NS160 and the TVS Apache RTR 160 4V.
